What is involved
Once termites are found, the priority is eliminating the colony rather than disturbing it. From there, a management system protects the building going forward, either a treated soil zone around the structure or a monitoring and baiting system, depending on the construction and the site. Treatment deals with an active colony that is already present. Protection is the system that stops termites getting into the building afterwards.
Most properties with live activity need both, in that order: eliminate the colony, then protect the building.
What protection options are there?
The two main approaches are a treated soil zone around the building, and a monitoring and baiting system. Which suits depends on the construction and the site.

Do I need an inspection first?
Yes. Protection is designed around what the inspection finds, including where termites could get in and whether there is current activity.
A termite inspection starts from $299 and comes with a written report.
Does home insurance cover termite damage?
Check the termite or vermin exclusion in your home insurance product disclosure statement, and if it is unclear, ask your insurer in writing.
Repairs to termite-damaged timber are often not a claimable event, which is why prevention is the part you control.
